Better is an overused phrase, and in its overuse, it is become empty. An empty phrase means nothing. Yet, entire industry, department, and subcultures hinge their identity on this word, “better.” It is the definition of this word which makes it enticing to use, yet due to lazy communication, or worse nefarious undertones, the 6-letter word itself has become an idol of worship without regard to the actual bettering of circumstance.
A reasonable viewing of how this word “better” is being used in communication is as a mask for the word “different” with the connotation that the speaker wants the hearer to favorably view the difference.
“It’s different an you should like it.”
Better, by definition, is the condition of being more good. Boxing it into a shallow meaning solely regarding opinion as the determining factor has ruined the visionary value of the concept of better. Rather than immature evaluation, it is the call of this author that, at least in some culture of Reason, the understanding of better moves us toward truly more good circumstance.
Let’s better better!
